Historical Background of the Amber Valley Camp. Mr Clifford Morris FRPS.
Mr David Beck has forwarded to Barrie Sheard, Society Archivist, a book entitled 'Biographical Dictionary - Men of the Time' by Edward Walford [click on photograph alongside] which was presented as a School prize to Charles Matlock for 'diligence and good conduct' in 1862. It is especially interesting to note that the crest, which is embossed on both front and back covers of the includes the words Derby Grammar School and the motto ' Digniovi Detur' which, we gather, translates as 'Let it be given to the more worthy', surely an entirely appropriate inscription for a school prize. The heraldry used resembles the OTC badge which is also displayed on the website.

The book, kindly donated by Mr Beck, has been added to the Old Derbeian Society archive records held in the Library of Derby Grammar School.

It is also interesting to note that the same heraldry was used by the Old Derbeian Society for its blazer badge that was in use from approximately 1938 until the early 1950's, so reports from John Booth (1942-49) and several other ODs of that era indicate. An example of this blazer badge [click on photograph alongside] has been presented to the Archives by Gordon Hyde (1945-51) who now lives in New Zealand. The badge was brought back to the UK by Barrie Sheard after his recent visit 'down under'.
The technical evolution of the Derbeian magazine explained in a preface by Mr Brian Seager (Headmaster) in the 1984 edition.
