Obituaries

J. N. L. Tillett (Derby School 1938-45)

Jeffrey Tillett was the first Mayor of the City of Derby and was in post when the Queen visited Derby in 1977 to give the town city status. He was and English teacher, music examiner, a Conservative county councillor and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Derby. Jeffrey Tillett, originally from Alvaston, was first elected as a councillor in 1957 and was leader of the council between 1988 & 1989 and was the last surviving Alderman a position awarded for his long service.

Jeffrey was a founder member of the East Midlands Arts Association, Derby Playhouse, Derby Civic Society, Metro Cinema and the Derby Community Arts Trust.


M. J. Evans (Derby School 1961-68)

John Evans, the co-owner of the Flower Pot public house King Street, Derby, has died suddenly from a heart attack at the age of fifty-eight. John & his staff acted as "mine hosts" providing refreshment at the Flower Pot for many years following the Society's annual Remembrance Day Service at the Derby School war memorial.
